A question I have for my colleagues about my advocacy action plan is, how does one know what the limit to technology use is? How can a Twitter, a Facebook, and a blog all be consistently updated? I know that time is a limitation for me at the moment, being a working mother and enrolled in school, and so my worry is that I’ll take on too much that I know little of administrating.
I am searching for resources that target presentation ideas as well as resources in favor of speech delays that advocate for the need of awareness. These resources will help the information I am to distribute through social networks and my presentation. I want to focus more on finding why it is detrimental that parents are aware of speech delays when their children are still young, even if their children have one or not, because it causes the parent to be more aware of any abnormalities in speech.
I found one article to be particularly inspirational and insightful about speech delays. The article was a shared personal experience that a mother had. She noticed her daughter had a speech problem, and consulted her pediatrician. The pediatrician assured her it was nothing to worry about, however, the mother remained unconvinced. She then decided to call an organization called “Early Start,” which focuses on early intervention, thus showing that initiative, being informed about resources and early intervention are beneficial.

My short terms goals are not specific enough, and I think I am asking for too much. Should I ask people in my community also to join in this effort? I have many ideas and suggestions on how this can work. My mentor has been helpful in assisting me, but I could use a little more help. How can I condense short term goals and still reach for the same effect? I am seeking the help of the Literacy Council to provide ideas and resources to my parents to help with reading at home. I thought it might be beneficial to have some of the parents come into a classroom setting at twice a month to observe how teachers and reading specialist read to children. I have found my colleagues to be helpful in getting me some insight, but I still get the impression that no one really wants to make a commitment to my long term goals.
ReplyDeleteThanks

Do not worry Maria, you are not the only one concerned with social media. I too am having a hard time with social media. I think that information presented on social medial sites are made by those who have the time. Being a parent, full time student, having a full time job, and other responsibilities social media takes a back seat to everything else.
ReplyDeletePersonally the only time I use social media sites are when they are required for classes, other than that I do not care to use them. Like I said before I, as well as others have other obligations and who has the time outside of all the other things going on? I know I don't.
Good luck with everything. I wish you the best. Take care and thanks for sharing.

Maria,
ReplyDeleteI truly understand your work load, because I am also a single parent and work full-time. I did not think about face book, or twitter, but those are excellent ideas. It really does not take alot to keep it up to date, if you want to access it from your cell phone and then you can update as much as you want and where you are. Your research topic is also very interesting.
Yvette,
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way as you. Perhaps if you change your long term goals a bit people will be more willing to join right away. I don't want you to become disheartened, instead maybe something more manageable will inspire others. Stay strong!
Maria
Tanja,
It is really hard to manage social media for me, there are many changes to what was once simple and it requires more and more time to administer. However, I am certain you'll find a balance with everything, just like I hope I will too!
Maria
Lagina,
Thanks for that! Now that I know Facebook is mobile, it might ease everything. Thanks for sharing,
Maria
Maria, I think your use of social media sites and updating them is based on what you have time for. Some people have lots of time to devote to them and others, like me and many of our fellow students, do not. I'm still a little intimidated by some and that's probably another reason why I don't use them much. My classes here at Kendall have helped me get my feet wet a little in the area of blogging but I have yet to venture onto sites like Twitter. I'm sure there is a time and place of value for everything. We just have to see what works for us. When it comes to advocacy, there could be some great benefits to using social media sites because of the number of people the information reaches. Good luck!!
ReplyDeleteMaria,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of your helpful comments and discussions. I hope that you will continue to advocate on behalf of young children. You have a great plan and I know that you have the passion. I have heard your concerns in you voice and have felt your determination to move forward towards issues that you believe in. Allow your families to walk with you as you take your issues beyond the classroom and past this school quarter. You're doing a great job
